Introduction
After many years of dental problems, discomfort, continually breaking teeth (in particular two front teeth which looked unsightly), approximately 10 to 15 visits to my NHS dentist each year, I decided enough was enough! Whilst understanding my NHS dentist has limited resources, I needed a long term solution to the numerous dental problems I had rather than a short term “patch-up”.
After making some enquiries, Richard Insley of Richard & Noreen Insley Dental Practise was recommended to me.
01 April 2014 Initial Free Consultation
I met Richard and his assistant Jackie for the first time to discuss my options. Richard confirmed my thoughts that there is only so many times these problems can be “patched-up” and if a long term solution wasn’t taken, within a few years I would lose all my teeth. At 53 years of age, this was not an option I was prepared to consider.
Richard also confirmed that smoking for the last 35 years had caused the majority of my problems, poor gums and bone loss.
We decided a more detailed consultation was required and I left the Dental Practise feeling very optimistic.
08 April 2014 Detailed Consultation + X-Rays
I went to the dentist for an in-depth consultation including detailed X-Rays. We looked at the X-Rays and discussed my options. Richard and Jackie were sure with a lot of work and also my commitment, they could solve all my problems. Richard also told me to ensure long term prevention of further problems, gum disease and bone loss, I really should stop smoking. This is something I am desperately trying to do!
Richard showed me some amazing “before & after” photos of other patients he had treated, which gave me a great deal of confidence and optimism. Richard and Jackie prepared a treatment plan for me that would last approximately two months with one to two visits to the dentist each week.
After reviewing the treatment plan and considering all my options, whilst feeling extremely apprehensive (not being the most confident of people at the dentist), I decided to go ahead with the treatment.
28 April 2014 Appointment 1
Today the treatment began. To be honest I had mixed feelings. It felt good that the treatment was about to start which would ultimately resolve the problems I was experiencing, make me look a lot better, which I know will improve my confidence and allow me to smile with my mouth open, showing my teeth! However, I was also feeling very anxious and apprehensive.
After discussing this with Richard and Jackie, I was quickly reassured that all would be fine. Each stage of each procedure was explained to me in detail and if at any time I wanted to stop and have a break, I could just raise my hand – this was particularly reassuring.
Three hours later, after having had two extractions, one root filling, scale and polishing and further preparatory work, the first days treatment was over. Not too bad at all!
Richard gave me advise following the extractions and gave me a Post-Operative Advice information pack. That afternoon and the following day, whilst feeling a little groggy, there was actually very little pain.
30 April 2014 Appointment 2
Hygienist Visit
Today I went to the dentist and had an appointment with Kelly the Hygienist and Sarah. Again, Kelly explained in detail what was going to happen and the treatment began. Whilst my teeth are very sensitive, Kelly continually gave me a lot of reassurance to the point I almost felt relaxed!! After a lot of cleaning, scaling and polishing, Kelly discussed various aspects of dental hygiene, cleaning procedures and recommended and demonstrated different types of brushes, interdental brushes and toothpaste. After an hour the session was over and we agreed to have another session in three months’ time.
